Exotic locales that are tropical and sunny are the perfect destinations for winter vacations. While your friends back home are bundled up in the snow, you can be lounging under a palm tree, warm and relaxed. You’ll have nothing to worry about – well, almost nothing. The only thing that can put a damper on your trip is the same thing that heats it up – the sun. In order to avoid a nasty sunburn, just follow these simple tips.
Cover Your Body
On vacation, limit your skin’s exposure to the sun by wearing bathing suit cover-ups. Lightweight long pants and long-sleeved shirts are the best protection against the sun. By covering up, you can enjoy being outside for long periods of time without worrying about spending too much time in the direct sunlight. When you’re not in the beach or pool, wear your cover-up. Your towel can also double as a coverup – use it to intermittently cover the most sensitive parts of your body, like your face, while you sunbathe.
Huge sunglasses aren’t just fashionable, they’re practical. The bigger your sunglasses are, the more of your face they’ll protect from the sun’s rays. It’s important to protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them from UVA and UVB rays, so make sure your sunglasses are properly treated to do so. A wide-brimmed hat will protect your scalp, face, and ears – areas that are usually the most neglected when it comes to sun care. A visor or baseball cap works, too.
Always Use Sunscreen
Sunscreen is the most important thing to bring on your vacation. Make sure your sunscreen is labeled “broad spectrum.” It should also be waterproof and at least 30 SPF. Apply sunscreen all over your body, and reapply it every two hours. On the beach, the sun’s rays are intensified. The water and sand reflect the sun, making it hit your skin even harder. When you’re by the water, use a large umbrella to shield you from the sun. You can also try to plan your leisure time at the beach or pool for when the sun’s rays are the least strong – in the early morning and early evening. Shiny surfaces also reflect sunlight, so avoid sunbathing near them.
During vacation, lots of people only worry about the sun when they’re laying by the beach or pool, and that’s a mistake. When you’re sightseeing, strolling, taking a tour, or doing any type of outside activity, you need to protect yourself against the sun. Even if you’re only going to be outside for a short period of time, put sunscreen on all the exposed parts of your body. Wear your coverups and protective accessories everywhere. Even a little bit of unprotected time in the sun can cause a sunburn or worsen any burning you already have.
