Enjoy the summer heatwave in style

“Oh, yeah. I’m sweating in here. Roasting. Boiling. Baking. Sweltering. It’s like a sauna. Furnace. You can fry an egg on my stomach. Ohh, who wouldn’t lap this up? It’s ridiculous. Tremendous. Fantastic. Fan-dabby-dozy-tastic.” You may recognise that as Ray Winstone’s opening lines from Jonathan Glazer’s critically-acclaimed thriller Sexy Beast as his character sunbathes by the side of his pool. It sums up the relationship between us Brits and the sun rather well. We love it. We can’t get enough of it. We don’t get enough of it. So when the rain clouds go away and summer finally does hit, you can be sure we’ll be outside for every last glorious, sweltering minute of it.

Sun worshippers are no doubt already laying out their beachwear in preparation, for this promises to be a particularly fantastic summer. In fact, it could well be the hottest ever recorded, according to forecasts. Scientists were so confident, they claimed earlier this year that there was a 75 per cent chance of such. Rising temperatures in the waters along the Pacific equator have prompted meteorologists to predict plenty of record-breaking temperatures for the UK and other parts of the world, as a result of what is known as an El Nino weather pattern.

With this in mind, now would be a great time to invest in a new pair of sunglasses to keep your eyes protected from harmful UV rays and stop you from having to squint all day. Here, we take a look at some of the most exciting trends in summer eye wear from 2014. If you spot a style that takes your fancy, check out the range available at Conlons. Remember, if you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s possible to get all manner of regular and designer sunglasses frames with prescription lenses.

Make the most of your frames – It may be the lenses that do the hard work, protecting your eyes from the sun’s UV rays, making it easier to see in extremely sunny conditions and optionally providing vision correction if you opt for prescription lenses. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate frames in style? One of the big on-trend looks this summer is all set to be loud frames, so don’t be afraid to go bold and colourful.

Go all the way round – Every decade has its moment in the ‘retro’ sun, and for the last couple of years, the 90s have been the in thing. This shows no signs of changing in 2014, with round frames likely to prove popular
once again. Large round frames are particularly suited to individuals with oval, heart-shaped or angular faces.

Timeless classics – Some brands and styles are eternally in fashion, such is their iconic status and appeal. If you like to invest for the long-term, you can’t go wrong with a pair of Aviators or Wayfarers. These will look good no matter what year it is and part of their enduring popularity is that they suit almost any face type.
